WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist drug, primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, as well as long-term weight management as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Its core effects are achieved by regulating blood glucose, delaying gastric emptying, and suppressing appetite, resulting in glycemic control and weight loss.
Indications and Mechanism of Action
Semaglutide has multiple mechanisms of action. Based on different dosages and formulations, it has been approved in China for two indications: the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and long-term weight management for overweight and obese adults (with or without comorbid diabetes).
Blood Glucose Control
• By activating GLP-1 receptors, it stimulates insulin secretion and inhibits glucagon release, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
• Indicated for patients with type 2 diabetes (in combination with diet and exercise), and provides certain cardiovascular protection for individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Weight Management
Delays gastric emptying, increases satiety, and reduces caloric intake. Indicated for adults with a BMI ≥ 30, or BMI ≥ 27 with obesity-related comorbidities.
